What is it gonna take to land a job now?

I've graduated with a bachelor's in mechanical engineering 2 years ago but because of some legal status issues I was unable to get a job in my field or more like I didn't really try since my papers weren't in order. so I've been basically working odd jobs in restaurants and such and now that my resident alien status has been re-established. It seems that none of the employers seems to be interested. I get no replys from them exceptt for sales position that work on commission or agencies who want to send my *** to iraq to be a translator since I am a tri-langual . any feedback would be appreciated as what the next step should be as I am frustrated and on the verge of desperation. thank you.
